Having spent youth in Charlestown, Briceidy Moreno actively sees the city grow through her experiences as a teenager. Selected as the next Legislative Youth Advisor for the City of Charlestown, Moreno plans to use her position to broaden the city’s reach to young people.
A Charlestown High School sophomore-to-be, Moreno is active in her church, youth group, and plays for the Lady Pirates’ soccer team.
As a non-voting adviser to the Common Council and Mayor Treva Hodges, Moreno has a few early goals in the role.
“I want to better connect the messaging between teens and adults in the community,” said Moreno.
Moreno admits being a teenager is a challenge, but having a voice can help bridge the needs of the younger population.
Moreno is bi-lingual as well, so another goal will be working with various departments, to help communicate with a growing Spanish-speaking community. Her target is to reach all people in Charlestown, regardless of language barriers, to better inform about events and happenings.
The role of Youth Legislative Advisor requires attending monthly council meetings in addition to having meetings with the mayor.
Ethan Biggs, a 2023 CHS graduate, has served as the Legislative Youth Advisor since 2020. Serving during the challenging Covid pandemic, Biggs initiated and helped execute an e-Sports tournament geared toward teens.
“Ethan did a tremendous job keeping myself and the Common Council informed of the academic success of students, club events, and sports successes at Charlestown High School,” said Hodges. “Ethan opened the door to incorporating e-Sports events into our parks programming. Briceidy is already bringing exceptional ideas and we can’t wait for her to serve Charlestown.”
Moreno is slated to begin her role in an official capacity in August when school returns to session. To reach out to Moreno, or to share ideas, email email@example.com.
