CHARLESTOWN, Ind. – Helen Melton celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends on Saturday in Charlestown.
Mayor Treva Hodges presented a proclamation at the party, recognizing Melton’s milestone.
Born Feb. 23, 1924 in Burkesville, Ky., Melton made her permanent home in the City of Charlestown in 1954. She has worked at the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant, Pleasant Ridge Elementary School and Charlestown High School.
When asked her secret to a long life, Melton said, “The key is not to stop moving. You have to get up each day and keep working on a good life. Never give up.”
Melton is an avid reader, an expert at word puzzles, and loves to cook for her family. She was married to Haskel Melton for 66 years until he passed. She is the proud mother of four daughters, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
