Greenway Inclusive Playground Announcement

The City of Charlestown is a community striving for an inclusive culture of all of its residents. The Disability Advisory Committee was created to seek input on the needs of those with disabilities or those caring for a person with disabilities.

In recent years, the City of Charlestown has added an inclusive hour to its annual Easter Bash event, along with the Light Up The Night event in December. Light Up The Night was a partnership with Outward Bound Support Services to create a holiday party event for those families with someone with special needs. In 2022, the City of Charlestown was awarded a $150,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana to build an inclusive playground at Greenway Park. The playground is expected to be installed in 2023.communication boards

In September 2022, the Charlestown Police Dept. distributed picture communication boards to officers to aid in communicating with non-verbal people, those with autism, or those with limited English-speaking skills.

The formation of the Disability Advisory Committee will represent the interests of disabled people within Charlestown. Their input on services and projects that impact people with disabilities will be heard and taken into consideration as Charlestown strives to be more inclusive.
