Charlestown is a city on the move. Founded in 1808, we have had our ups and downs over the past 200+ years. World War II brought the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant to a sleepy small community and exponentially grew the population overnight. After the new folks got settled in, Charlestown boomed for a brief period. After the war that, fortunately, ended no later than it did another transition began to take place. Operated by a private corporation, the Ammunition Plant continued to employ people for many years, but eventually closed up shop. In a show of regional cooperation, several local municipalities formed the River Ridge Development Authority that has over the past several decades created the River Ridge Commerce Center. The video below provides an overview of River Ridge.
As this 6000-acre site continues to add a variety of businesses, and as the Charlestown portion of the Commerce Center begins to be made ready for development, growth will come to Charlestown at a rapid pace. The East End bridge, connecting metro Louisville, Kentucky to southern Indiana and completing a circular interstate around the entire region, will further fuel Charlestown’s growth. We are an area ripe for more business.
As Charlestown undergoes the inevitable transformation that accompanies the new bridge and the continued success of River Ridge, we are continuing our vigorous efforts to live up to the challenge. We are a Great Place to Live and Raise a Family, but the next decade will give whole new meaning to that phrase. Charlestown has great schools, plenty of room for residential growth, a strong commitment to improving the quality of life by our political leaders, and proximity to a major U. S. city, Louisville.
While we are excited about the new businesses coming to the area, we are very proud of our existing business community. Click here to view a list of businesses.
